The present administration of His Excellency, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki saw the need to move along with the global trend of modernization and computerization of its operation, and thus took the bold step of computerizing the state and administration process. This led to the establishment of computerized land data and special based information infrastructure, which today is known as KWARA GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM with "KWAGIS" as its acronyms.
KWAGIS is a system that captures information on all kwara state lands in functional digital format. It is more flexible system of recording and administering land information against the hitter to manual system. The system is designed to link with the cadastral system at the survey department.

Geographic Information System (GIS)
The Geographic Information System (GIS) and Land Information System (LIS) technology have been found to be indispensable for effective and sustainable spatial planning and effective Land management.
The exact origin of Geographic Information System is quite uncertain. In the 1930s and 1940s, Surveyed output (Maps and Charts) had begun to produce through the manual method using a common reference system, using dimensionally stable transparent base materials such as the drafting film (Polyester, astralon etc). The map layers were usually of the same physical dimension, scale, projection and reference system. The ability to separate the map into various map layers of specific themes paved the way of manual overlaying. Base on the observed relationships on the various layers assembled together, a quantitative evaluation of the land management where made and decision taken.
The advent of computer technology revolutionized the way data are collected, stored, processed and produced the output. As far back as 1991, it has become necessary for the automation of the manual overlaying technique and record keeping (Land administration) in the Ministry to be computerized for the purpose of improving the land administration processes on the Kwara.
Nigeria and GIS
In 2005, there was an attempt to understudy some GIS formations in Nigeria with the aim of developing same in the State. This couldn’t yield any positive result, until the emergence of a purposeful leadership of Governor Bukola Saraki in May 2007, when a definite action commence which culminated in the award of contract for the design, installation and implementation of Kwara Geographic information System (KWAGIS) with the contract being awarded to Sivan Design D. S. Limited in April, 2008.
